Stop Windows XP from asking if you want to send a report to Microsoft whenever a program crashes

Whenever a program crashes, whether it’s a Microsoft application, a component of Windows, or a third-party application, a window appears, prompting you to send a “report” to Microsoft. If you actually believe that Microsoft will use the data you send them to fix bugs in Windows, I have some beach-front property in Nevada to sell you…
Here’s how to disable this feature, either completely or selectively:

Open System in the Control Panel (or right-click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
Choose the Advanced tab, and click Error Reporting.
You can disable error reporting entirely here, or enable it selectively for certain programs. Click Ok when you’re done

How do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer?

Once again, Microsoft isn’t following their own rules. The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is set as the default image viewer for all sorts of file types in indows XP. Unfortunately, choosing a new program as the default in the File Types window won’t change this, and there’s no option in the Windows interface that can disable this component. It’s a really stupid design, and it takes a Registry change to fix it:

Solution #1:

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT SystemFileAssociations image ShellEx ContextMenuHandlers.
Delete the ShellImagePreview key.
Close the Registry Editor when you’re done; the change will take effect immediately.

Solution #2:

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT CLSID {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066} shellex.
Delete the MayChangeDefaultMenu key.
Close the Registry Editor when you’re done; the change will take effect immediately.

Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting
Contributed by Kevin Mazzone

Turn Off the CD-ROM Autorun

If you hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD, the autorun is bypassed.

Windows XP - Solution 1
Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, CD recorder, or DVD drive, and select Properties.
Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.

Windows XP - Solution 2
Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.
Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.
Turn off the checkbox next to each drive letter for which you want AutoPlay disabled.

Windows 2000/XP
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCdrom.
Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value. (If it’s not there, create it by selecting Edit -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing “Autorun” for its name.)
You may have to log out and then log back in for this change to take effect.

Note: With this solution, Windows will no longer be notified when you insert a new CD. To make sure the correct icon and title for the current CD are displayed in My Computer and Explorer, press F5 to refresh the window.

Modify bandwith reserved for QoS-aware programs

Traffic flow can be managed very well in Windows XP using the Quality of Service (QoS) Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP). However, programs must be designed to take advantage of this QoS API. The traffic from programs that are not QoS-aware are sent directly to a different API called TCI. These programs have to fight for bandwidth because unlike the QoS API, there is no bandwidth reservation. If you use a lot of QoS-aware programs and would like to change the percent of the bandwidth that is reserved for the program, read below. Make sure your logged on as Administrator. Do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.

Click on the Start button and select run.
Type gpedit.msc in the text box and click OK
Once the program loads, expand the Computer configuration branch.
Expand the Administrative templates branch.
Expand the Network branch.
Highlight the QoS Packet Scheduler in left window.
In right window double click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
On setting tab check the enabled option.
Where it says Bandwidth limit %, change it to read what ever percent you want to reserve for QoS-aware applications. (from 20 to 0 if you don’t want to use it).
Click OK and exit the group policy editor.
Go to your Network connections (start->my computer->my network connection-> view network connections).
Right click on your connection, choose properties then under the General or the Networking tab (where it lists your protocols) make sure QoS packet scheduler is enabled.
Now just reboot your computer and you are all done.
When a QoS-aware program is in use it will reserve the allocated amount of bandwidth and that will take away form other non QoS-aware programs. However, once the QoS-aware application is closed or closes the network connection, the bandwidth reservation is released. This is done by a series of PATH and RESV refresh messages sent back and fourth over the connection. Once these messages are no longer detected, the data flow is closed and the reservation of bandwidth is eliminated.
